Going Once! Twice! Gone Again! 3 HR for Varney
Wednesday, July 21st, 2021
Holden Knights second baseman Jared Varney put on a dazzling display of power today at Field of the Armadillos against the Colorado Springs Armadillos. In the 11-2 Knights victory Varney penned his name into the record books, slamming a trio of home runs in one of baseball's finest single-day efforts.
"He can hit them out anywhere, right, center, left, it doesn't matter," Colorado Springs manager Kevin Sciolino said. "He's super strong and stays on the ball so well."
Along with his three home runs, the 22-year-old had 3 hits in 4 at-bats, 5 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
"Life will always throw you curves, just keep fouling them off," Varney said after the game, when asked about his hitting philosophy. "The right pitch will come, and when it does, be prepared to run the bases. Or trot around them, like I did today."
Jared Varney flied out in the 1st, hit a solo-shot off Roither Hernandez in the 3rd, hit a two-run home run off Dimitri Stamatopoulos in the 5th, hit a two-run home run off Matt Dockman in the 6th and walked in the 8th.
Varney is swinging at a .231 pace on the year with 11 home runs, 28 RBIs and 19 runs scored. He has played in 35 games.
