The 2021 season did not get off to quite the start the Austin Murder Hornets had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Mesa Barracudas at The Hornet Nest. The final score was 3-2. Starting Pitcher Jake Odorizzi was the top performer for Mesa. Sam Delaplane, credited with the win, is now 1-0. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits. Joe Jimenez, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 1st save.

Mesa used the timely hitting of Yuli Gurriel to seize the win. The first baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Barracudas on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

Austin manager walt526 said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
