Thaiss Batters Grand Rapids for 5 Hits Monday, August 16th, 2021 Violet first baseman Matt Thaiss went down swinging at Ballpark of Grand Rapids today, knocking out 5 hits even as his Railsplitters fell, 10-7. "It was like I was hitting Little League pitching," Thaiss said after his 5-for-5 performance against the Grand Rapids Pipers. "No offense meant to Grand Rapids, but it was like I was back in little league again -- I could see the ball that well." After the game, his manager elaborated on the first baseman's improvements, saying Thaiss spent the offseason trying to shorten his swing and stay inside the ball. "That's what I'm trying to do," Thaiss agreed. "Be quick to the ball and let it travel a little farther so I get a better look at it." Matt Thaiss singled in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off Peter Lambert in the 4th, singled in the 6th, tripled in the 8th and singled in the 9th.
